SEGREGATION STILL EXISTS.
While schools are not racially segregated by law, segregation still exists. Most schools are still predominantly minority or predominantly white. And, within integrated schools, children tend to be segregated by classes; children who are not as academically prepared (typically underprivileged minority children) are frequently separated from more advanced (typically white) children.
Many factors contribute to this continued segregation. In the following sections, I discuss how three factors--affirmative action, housing segregation, and special education--affect the racial dynamics within schools today.
